PROJECT MANAGERS CASEBOOK – POTENTIAL GOTCHAS

Top tips for ensuring a trouble-free MAC request

Most Business Systems clients regularly carry out internal changes which result in a MAC (Moves, Additions and Change) request. This results in the requirement to make changes to their voice recording system, usually adding new extension users who require voice recording, or in a recession removing staff who are no longer there!

This is a simple task for our engineers to carry out but is reliant on receiving the correct information from our customers. To complete the work a little more is needed than someone pointing to the phone on the desk saying “that’s the one!”.

Extension side voice recorders usually have a clear demarcation point, usually in the comms room on a Patch Panel or Krone Frame. It is to this point that the connection to the extension is required to be made; so the information required from the customer or their PBX maintainer needs to clearly identify where the extension that is being added or removed appears. On a Krone frame this is normally referred to as the TN number (may be slightly different dependant on the PBX) which identifies exactly which port on the PBX cabling the extension appears. To voice record this extension is a simple case of running a jumper wire from the switch extension to the voice recording channel (which will be clearly labelled if it’s a BSL installation!) and then carrying out some simple admin work on the recorder. It’s a similar case if the extensions and voice recorder are presented on a patch panel; all that is needed is to identify the extension that is being added or deleted.

From experience, to ensure a trouble-free MAC request be sure to arm our engineers with the right up-to-date information before they turn up on site and you will benefit from a quick, seamless turn around on your request.
