The Monitor’s newshound on historic voice recorders finds…
Even the best pedigrees produce a runt of the litter occasionally!

Mark from Melbourne (Aus) writes:- “I bought an Elfin call recorder at ‘Trash & Treasure’ (that means car-boot sale for us Brits), can you tell me what it is and how best to use it”.

Sure we can Mark and we even found a picture of one too. What a classic piece this is and an outstanding flop despite the fact that it has a Racal badge on the front, hence ‘runt of the litter’. The Elfin is a single line voice and data recorder built around 1992ish running on a VHS cassette.

The Elfin recorder is remarkably similar to the SFR or ‘Singer Financial Recorder’ (so much so it could almost be one) which was a bright idea from a chap called Chris Singer. Chris designed his recorder on the anticipation that the UK financial trading authority would push for a law stating:- ‘all financial deals should record both the voice content of the trade plus the accompanying screen based reference data’. Had this law been passed then Chris would have cleaned up as he had the only recorder which met the criteria. Unfortunately the law was not passed and so SFR and Elfin both enjoyed brief and inglorious histories.

Verification of call ‘originality’ can be established on-site or by an independent third party via a hosted off-site service if preferred.

What’s the best use for it? – Give up mate, there isn’t one!
